A trusted name in Singapore, Straits Chinese Restaurant is where locals go for authentic Peranakan cuisine and an all-around superlative dining experience and is included in the Michelin Guide for 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively. The Keck Seng Tower outlet – you’ll find the other branch at Chinatown Plaza – is where you’ll experience some of the city-state’s best Peranakan dishes, all home-cooked and made using traditional recipes. Found inside of Keck Seng Tower on Cecil Street, just steps from Raffles Place and the downtown core, Straits Chinese Restaurant is the place to go for nyonya comfort food in the heart of the city.
Peranakan or nyonya cuisine combines the best of the Chinese and Malaysian kitchens, blending an array of spices and flavours with a range of ingredients including various rare mushrooms, fresh seafood and chillies. In Singapore, Straits Chinese Restaurant is leading the charge in that realm, drawing in locals with Peranakan heritage as well as tourists on the hunt for Singapore’s best cuisine. The restaurant’s location in Keck Seng Tower only moments from Raffles Place makes it all the more attractive for local workers.
Since 1953, Straits Chinese Restaurant near Raffles Place has been serving up their dishes to hordes of regulars and adventurous diners from all over the world. This Cecil Street restaurant features both Peranakan and Chinese menus, so feel free to mix and match to enjoy the best of both cuisines. Specialities from the menu include the beef rendang, the ikan sambal goreng and the babi panggang, a Peranakan grilled pork dish that’s served with a zesty sauce. The desserts at Straits Chinese are also worth ordering – choose from favourites like the water chestnut with coconut milk, the longan jelly and the sago honeydew. Booking ahead is a must when planning to dine at this local legend in Singapore’s Keck Seng Tower.
The food wasn't that great but it wasn't bad. It was regular Peranakan food without the wow. Like what I've read in another review, go only if you have no other options available, which was exactly what happened to me.
Good, not crowded on a Monday evening. Good attentive service. Provided a complimentary plate of their kuehs, and we were appreciative of their efforts to ensure we had a comfortable dining experience.
Very good Chinese Peranakan food with prompt and friendly service staff! They even give complimentary kueh at the end of the meal! The decor gives the place an even more authentic feel!
Food was good, as expected. Was there over weekend, so waiter attention and service was also good. HSBC discount provided the added positive feeling and satisfaction. Restaurant staff has been attentive.
The food is overall nice but not spicy enough. Keluak only got 2 pc for small order. Dessert too coconuty taste. Not to my liking. Waitress are super friendly.
Never sick of the delicious Nyonya dishes at Straits Restaurant, prepared by fresh spices & ingredients; always a wonderful experience dining here 😃👍🏻
The lunch set is ok for the price. Service is prompt but slightly over enthusiastic in recommending the dishes. Taste wise is ok also but not as good as the best Peranakan food tried
sambal kang kong, kai lan, seafood fried egg, otah, and asam fish. All the dishes tasted good except for the asam fish, worth visiting again! Great service.
Had a great time at Straits Chinese. The Christmas buffet lunch is worth the money. Staffs are nice and good Serving portion is big! First timer Recommended
Food were all tasty and to my liking, especially the buak kuluak chicken, babi poteh and lemongrass drink. Service were attentive. Restaurant threw in complimentary dessert.
