The Jungle Book’s Shere Kahn was a king in the animal kingdom. Taking its name from the Urdu and Punjabi word for tiger or lion, Singapore’s Sher is a king among Indian restaurants, and for sure some of its dishes have considerable bite. Serving up cuisine with northern Indian, Punjabi and Pakistani influences, Sher is a welcome addition to the dining possibilities down Sembawang Road. Simply and elegantly decorated, this long, narrow restaurant features a terrace for al fresco dining when it’s warm (or your curry’s too hot!) and an interior flanked on one side by a well- stocked bar for thirst-quenching beers, wines, and icy, mixed long drinks. Sher is glowing with warmth throughout – a tantalising teaser of what’s to come. Sher’s casual dining philosophy belies the stellar northern Indian cuisine on offer at its Sembawang Road premises. True, you can pop in for a coffee or a beer – its open frontage and terrace is an invitation for that sort of thing. But, of course, the real magic happens when you sample a dish from this superlative Singapore Indian restaurant. Seafood, chicken, and mutton curries abound, and there are many delicious biryani and vegetable dishes on offer, too. Warm up to these with a starter, and match your choice with fresh naan and a cold beer and you’ll discover that you’ve got the appetite of a tiger, and a feast at Sher fit for a king.
