The genesis of Richmond Station came about when proprietor and barista extraordinaire Phyllis Lau took the reins behind the coffee machine at a London cafe near the underground station of the same name. Bringing cool Britannia back to the shores of Singapore, Lau’s modern, British-style cafe serves all-day breakfast, lunch and dinner. English pastries, breads, crumpets and muffins are baked on-site at the Richmond Station’s Bali Lane premises, close to Arab Street in Bugis. 100% halal, and with a little Asian-fusion flair to leaven the British fare – not to mention perfect coffee – Richmond Station is for many the ultimate cafe destination.

We love Richmond Station for its home-baked cakes and pastries. Take aim at a butterscotch cake riddled with toffee and walnuts or the very English trifle (layers of lemon custard, jam, vanilla sponge and biscuit, topped with berries and a lemon-zest drizzle), and make sure you match this dessert-lovers’ paradise with a cup of Richmond Station’s distinctive coffee, a nutty blend with hints of chocolate. Singapore’s tea-totallers will love the range of delicate blends on offer, too, and this cafe at the southern end of Bugis’ Bali Lane is often packed with happy, caffeinated people enjoying the atmosphere of the cosy space.
Wading into Richmond Cafe’s more substantial menu offering, diners are encouraged to take their classic eggs benedict one step further and opt for the crab benedict, with shredded crab meat seasoned with thyme and oregano alongside the perfectly poached eggs with hollandaise – a great example of the adventurous Asian fusion dishes on offer at this distinctive Bugis cafe. When it comes to the best of British, the rustic fish pie is a local favourite, with lightly creamed spinach, potatoes and salmon and plenty of English cheddar. It should be clear by now that Richmond Station is attuned to Singapore’s many fans of seafood (there are truffle fries with confit mushroom and parmesan for the fans as well!). For a really opulent dish that shouts restaurant, go for the healthy Norwegian salmon with Lau’s own pesto or the pan-seared sea bass. Healthy, tasty, and robust additions to the cafe’s menu.
