If you hear Australians in Singapore they may mention Maccas. The French could suggest Chez McDo, and Americans may be looking for Mickey D’s, but if you are around Baghdad Street in Bugis, there’s a good chance they’re not talking about the golden arches but rather the gold standard of kebabs in this part of Singapore: Mac-Doner. This small and welcoming place may mislead you into thinking it’s a standard, reliable doner kebab shop with a spinning chunk of meat, but no. Mac-Doner dishes up authentic Middle Eastern meaty treats the proper way, sizzling off a traditional grill having been marinated in homemade sauces, yoghurt or spices. Mac-Doner does have, of course, a selection of delicious doner sandwiches, and we can particularly recommend the hummus and lamb shawarma platter. Then of course there are the moreish starters, from hot favourites (falafel and halloumi are hard to pass up) to refreshing traditional salads and even a stunning aubergine-based ‘mac vegan’ casserole.
