Chinese restaurants are to be found all over the city of Singapore, but it pays to remember that not all of them were created equal. If you’re in Geylang, just to the east of the Downtown Core, you’re as spoiled for choice as anywhere in Singapore, but it still pays to do what the locals do and head straight to Beijing Neng Ren Ju on Geylang Road. While there are outlets for Sichuan, Hainanese, Teochew and Cantonese cooking to be found all over, if it is a restaurant with a dedication to the food of the Chinese capital that takes your fancy then Beijing Neng Ren Ju is for you: they offer delicacies such as whole fish with spring onions and chillies, steamed dumplings, bao buns stuffed with shredded pork and, of course, the iconic Peking duck. Take the train out to Aljunied, Paya Lebar or Dakota on the MRT and prepare for a taste of Beijing in Singapore. Book ahead though, as they will fill up if you leave it too late.
