Ash & Char is a modern Singapore steakhouse and bar, specialising in chargrilled steaks served in the most stylish of settings. The lunch menu and the dinner menu differ quite a lot. Earlier in the day you can expect the aforementioned steaks alongside some gourmet Asian favourites, while the evening means tapas and further steak varieties such Black Angus. As well as great food, the bar stock is extremely impressive and you can enjoy all of this on McCallum Street in Telok Ayer. Reserve a table now.
Ash & Char, as we said, is the most stylish of settings. As steakhouses and bars in Telok Ayer go, Ash & Char is complete with a fine selection of dark and light woods, vibrant paint, cool patterns and plenty of light. It really is a very pleasant place to sit and it’s excellently located as well, right on McCallum Street, just down from Telok Ayer MRT. So whether for a casual meal or a slightly more formal occasion, this is one Singapore restaurant that won’t disappoint and has all the bases covered.
For lunch we’d really recommend the Asian-inspired grilled steak rice bowl with onsen egg and salad, as well as the Black Angus tenderloin served with corn, onions, miso butter and perhaps a side of truffle fries. For dinner – and a much larger fill – share some steakhouse-style tapas if your party is quite large and be sure not to miss the signature char siew, BBQ St Louis ribs or the fried cauliflower. Meanwhile, the selection of steak is impressive, our pick of the bunch perhaps being the 200gm Angus oyster Blade with added foie gras or scallops. Dishes are presented beautifully and some of the most indulgent you’ll find in this part of Singapore.
Attracted by their 1-for-1 steak at $40++, my girlfriend and I made our way to Ash & Cha. For starter, we ordered the Salt & Pepper Calamari, only to be advised that it was sold out. We ordered the St Louis BBQ Ribs instead. Our steaks came before the starter. But, no worries there as both dishes were meat. We had ordered our steaks done medium rare and they came as ordered. The steak was heavenly chewy and flavorsome. The BBQ ribs met the expectations of two seasoned carnivores too. The meat did not exactly slide off the bones but it was tender and smoky. Two thumbs up!
Overall, ambience was great! The restaurant even went on an extra effort to dim the lights and made the mood a bit more relaxing and lighter in the inner couches area. Food was perfect; highly recommending their char siew, roasted to perfection with a seeet yet not clingy sauce. Would def come here again!
