This section of Singapore has close links to China, and has done ever since the 1840s, when Chinese workers and traders started to arrive in large numbers. Thousands of these arrivals worked as rickshaw pullers and labourers in the construction of modern Singapore, but their descendants are now proud proprietors of a community full of superb Chinese restaurants. Geylang is the place to go if you feel the need for Sichuan style pork, smoked duck, ginger prawns or Chengdu style noodles. If you love southern Chinese cuisine, it's a wonderful place to choose.

However, it's not all about southern Chinese food in Geylang. Hakka restaurants are also common in the area, showcasing the cooking of Taiwan's dominant ethnic group.
