Thinking about making a The Mad Sailors – British Kitchen booking?

Rustling up some proper authentic British fare, The Mad Sailors is a welcome sight for anybody in Singapore missing the comforts of home or wanting a true taste of Auld Blighty. Set up in seriously cool digs on humming Haji Lane, with kitschy padded sofa benches, wooden tables and floorboards, exposed brick and moody lighting creating an atmosphere somewhere between an old captain’s mess and cool contemporary cafe, The Mad Sailors have nailed the look. But Bugis is a competitive area for modern, international and hipster joints, so you gotta come up big on the grub too – thankfully, that’s of no concern here. The Mad Sailors menu is dedicated solely to the tastes familiar to those with any experience in proper British eating.

The classics are done exceptionally well, with bangers & mash, shepherd’s pie and the ribeye roast dinner with gravy and Yorkshire pudding all firm favourites among Singapore expats. The international influence on modern British cuisine is well represented, too, and we reckon the cream cheese and salmon or salt beef bagel here in Haji Lane are as good as the granny-run Jewish joints on Brick Lane. Its location in the coolest part of Bugis is part of the attraction, of course, but it also means The Mad Sailors fair hums most of the time, so it’s always good to nab a spot ahead of time if you’re lining up some satisfying British grub morning, noon or night.
