One of our favourite uses of West Melbourne’s funky Soolzip is for its KFC. It’s Korean fried chicken, that is. You can get this funky bird dressed in four different ways, and it’s a mainstay in many Soolzip regulars’ diets. While this restaurant on the corner of Victoria Street and Peel is dominated by Korean cuisine, it is in fact an Asian fusion restaurant – it’s even scooped an award for the best Japanese in Melbourne! Book a table for an evening of Korean classics, Asian beer and liquor, to pull a few fusion punches on the sly.
If you’re a regular to Soolzip’s restaurant on the corner of West Melbourne’s Victoria Street and Peel you’ll probably have your dining ritual down pat. Take a seat, order a classic Korean beer (Hite, Cass, Max) and a whole or half of your favourite Korean fried chicken: the original, the sweet chilli or spicy pelicana chicken, or the soy honey variety with a side of pelicana, mild mustard, or white radish sauce. Others go for the predominantly vegetarian Japanese selection, voted some of the best in Melbourne: edamame, gyoza, agedashi tofu, okonomiyaki. Flexing fusion muscle, opt for the kimchi pancake, a Korean take on the Japanese street food staple of okonomiyaki.
Soolzip serves donburi, too, each dish coming with two side dishes and a miso soup. Again with the fusion, Soolzip’s beef bibimbap donburi shakes culinary hands across the Sea of Japan. One of Japan’s best inventions aside from karaoke, explicit cartoons, capsule hotels and love motels, household robots, workplace-tolerated napping, and the world’s shortest escalator, the bento box is the tupperware container we all wish we had, keeping rice separate from curry, sushi separate from noodle and so on. Here at West Melbourne’s Soolzip, you can grab yourself a main course like the Korean pork bulgogi or the Japanese teriyaki chicken either more generously apportioned on a plate or tucked neatly into a bento box. Extravagant diners will, however, want to go for the LA beef rib steak fused with a soy sauce marinade, or the beef sashimi.
Staff are very friendly and helpful Awesome food choices especially the fried boneless chicken with creamy coleslaw sides recommended. Fast service, we will back again forsure
