About Six Poor Folk
There is superb food, there are great chefs, and there are cool cafes, bars and restaurants. Six Poor Folk greedily swallows up all of these elements. Found on Castlegate, an easy walk from Knaresborough station just outside Harrogate, Six Poor Folk is an example of how far fresh, high quality ingredients can carry you. The secret is already out, though, so be sure to book in advance to rediscover the pleasures of real food.

As the name suggests, this outstanding Knaresborough cafe and restaurant seeks to serve humble, wholesome food to ordinary folks, with little fuss and minimal fanfare. Well that’s all well and good ﹘ but if they didn’t want fuss, Six Poor Folk shouldn’t have made food like this! A growing number of real-food connoisseurs, from far further afield than kooky Knaresborough and nearby Harrogate, are fussing excitedly over what this little kitchen on Castlegate is managing to do, creating first-rate restaurant-quality food in a casual cafe and bar, relying on high quality products from producers from around Knaresborough, Harrogate, wider Yorkshire and the rest of the UK.
With the combined professional experience of their passionate chefs and worldly inspiration of the well-travelled minds behind this Castlegate market cafe and bar, these ingredients become an outstanding selection of lunch and dinner meals somehow simple, sophisticated and satisfying all at once. With fantastic fish from Hartlepool straight to Harrogate, mouth-watering meat from Kirkby, barrows of fresh vegetables and hand-picked craft beers and boutique wines from the bar, Six Poor Folk ﹘ and their popular ploughmans lunches, evening share platters and dozens of individual dishes ﹘ are throwing their weight behind the fight to remind people what food is meant to taste like.
Excellent food. The staff were friendly and efficient, and seemed genuine not overbearing. The atmosphere was nice and I particularly liked the music.
Absolutely delicious and lovely atmosphere. Always good but think this was our best meal yet. Good value as well, you're not ripped off with drinks like a lot of places.
This is a really nice friendly place with very good service. The food was nicely presented and of really good quality whilst also being very reasonably priced.
Great food and service. Lovely ambience. Menu is a mix of traditional and innovative offerings with plenty if vegetarian options plus the best steak for miles around.
Pre-theatre supper, but no problems. We were welcomed and looked after warmly, and the food was served prmptly but not rushed. There was an interesting selection of dishes for all courses, which made it difficult to choose. We all chose asparagus, but we're delighted with the surprise of the accompanying crispy duck eggs. The egg was very complementary with the asparagus and added substance. I thoroughly enjoyed my main course of baked aubergine and mushrooms, by my fellow diners were very impressed with the dramatic presentation if their vege burgers, which arrived as towering stack to the table. They spent the rest of the meal extolling the virtues of celeriac (which is not something you normally hear, even if it is one of THE most versatile vegetables). Lovely meal, but no room for dessert!
The food and service were exceptional. Our server couldn't have been more helpful and friendly, guiding us through the menu and explaining that the ingredients are locally sourced from award winning suppliers . And that the dishes were freshly prepared and when our food arrived we were not disappointed. It was a great experience and excellent value for money. Thankyou Six Poor Folk.
Always love the atmosphere here especially when Paul Mirfin band is playing! Disappointed with the food in that the meat served to one of the party was pretty tough however everyone else seemed very pleased. Service good in that there was a replacement meal offered but the bill was not reduced to include the cheaper meal. The service was already added to the bill and we were told it wasn't so we contributed again without realising it. Felt a bit done about that. Things always get complicated when a group is being catered for but that seems to be the nature of the beast. On the whole would go back especially for our group gatherings, the staff are always very pleasant it's just the end where you have to work out the bill, there must be an easier way!
Another great evening at Six Poor Folk in Knaresborough. The food was as ever fantastic freshly prepared local produce served in a relaxed friendly atmosphere. We loved the new additions to the menu and are looking forward to the live music this Friday evening from 8pm, Friday Night is Music Night is now a regular event.
Fun night out, we popped in for dinner . The food was up to Six Poor Folk's usual high standard and then stayed to listen to the band The Birdman Rallies and 6PF's resident singer Sarah Boyle. Very talented and a great evening good food, good drink and great entertainment....what more could you ask for.
This was not the first time we visited SIX POOR FOLK, and this visit was just as good as previous visits. The service was first class and the staff were very attentive, but not overly so THe food was very tasty and we did not have to wait very long. COST WAS ABOUT £45.00 for two starters, main courses couple of glasses of wine and a pint...Good Value A very casual dining experience and we will most definately visit again.....LOVE IT
Overall we enjoyed our visit to Six Poor Folk. The welcome was friendly and our table was right where we wanted it. Food was good, although my Caesar Salad was not particularly enjoyable. The rest of our party all enjoyed their food though. We will go again.
Delicious food and great service meant we had a very enjoyable meal and drinks. Six Poor Folk really is a gem conveniently situated in the heart of the picturesque market town of Knaresborough.
I have been to restaurant number of times and always had a good meal.Had a very poor experience on this occasion in respect of the main course - The Ploughmans. Issue was that a piece of cheese was presented that you wouldn't put in a mousetrap, and the bread was woeful. However on a positive note the service that we received was fantastic and every effort was made to rectify the issue- presented with an alternative cheese. The establishment also recognised the issues when we received the bill, without any prompting. The front of house staff were very professional and made this occasion an enjoyable experience. Don't be put of using this restaurant with my negative feedback l will go again and do hope this was a one off experience.
We had an excellent meal at Six Poor Folk. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The restaurant has an excellent atmosphere and we will be very happy to go again.
We went along for an early doors drink and dinner last Friday night, had a nice bottle of Provence Rose, a pint of Roosters Yankee, a sharing fish platter and 2 mains for less than £60. Really tasty quality food and tremendous value. At last an alternative to Carriages
Overall we enjoyed our visit to Six Poor Folk. The food was very good but service was quite slow. will go back again in the future.
The flatbread was a bit hard, maybe better to use pitta bread. Service not as good as other times we have been, but think that was due to the band outside. Good idea, but not if you want to have a quiet chat with friends.
Lovely meal with plenty of choices for non meat eaters. Great atmosphere. They even made a desert which was not on the menu but we had it on a previous visit, thank you
We went on a Saturday night and it was really busy, the staff did seem a little flustered. I was asked if having my burger medium was OK. I said 'Yes' if only it had been it was cooked with in an inch of it's life and was pretty tasteless. My wife's steak was better and she enjoyed it. The service was pretty poor.
Very lovely! Love the beer garden the best with the sofa! Was a bit too noisy with there being a children's party upstairs but the food was amazing and staff very attentive.
always excellent food and service. the team are friendly yet professional and make you feel well looked after! you must try the sharing fish platter, omg! fish pate and bacon jam is the best thing ever!
Very good steak and great local beers. A very good local singer and rounded off with an excellent cheeseboard for me and a crumble with malt custard for my wife. We will certainly be back.
Good food with good customer service. I have been before when it was under different management and found it lacking, however this little gem of a restaurant has improved 100% and has a bright future.
We've eaten there before & as always the food is delicious, it's a great atmosphere & the staff are really friendly. I would definitely recommend to friends & family.
Nice helpful staff. Food was very nice, well prepared and presented. Biggest downside was the menu was very limited and the fact that some of the items on the menu were not available even though the restaurant was very quiet didn't really help.
A really great venue. A high standard of food (you need to try the woof fish), really friendly staff and atmosphere. I will be going back there again.
Love this restaurant. Delicious food as always and buzzy atmosphere. Good value wine list and sensible size portions. Highly recommend 6 Poor Folk its our favourite Knaresborough restaurant.
The food is excellent, the staff make you feel very welcome, great atmosphere, lovely surroundings. Good value for money, no long waiting for food to be served
Excellent food-a really well thought out menu and good setting. Reasonably priced wine, the salt cod is fantastic! Went twice in 2 weeks, other restaurants take note!
I had the fish cakes, they were very nice, but 2 small fish cakes and a few salad leaf's seemed a bit skinny for a main course! Staff very friendly but service was quite slow considering it was fairly quiet.
Great food, great service! Really impressed with everything - child friendly so perfect for our family trip but also will definitely go back without the kids.
Not been for a while and we were not disappointed- excellent food and service. New menu with plenty if choice. Very happy. We will be back.
Menu not large but covers everything you could want. Wine list very reasonable. Food very good. Staff excellent. Service very good. What more can I say.
Lovely atmosphere bright and airy restaurant, friendly staff, good varied menu, food lovely, presented well will definitely be going back. Great central location in knarsborough
Lovely meal, enjoyed the new menu, great service, had 2 fussy children with us and they enjoyed their kids meal, we will be back :)
The food was fantastic. Service was a little slow but the staff were really friendly and it was pretty busy. Lovely place and atmosphere. Would go again.
Menu limited no vegetables available to order. Loved the different breads and different butters. Steak very fatty :-( had to ask 3 times for water. Really want this restaurant to do well but think menu is too limited. Lovely building and courtyard with friendly staff.
Lovely place, great service and delicious food. I also love their outdoor area, very cosy and stylish. Background music is spot on and so is the lighting.
The food was tasty - all 3 courses, the atmosphere was good, decent service, the only negative was it was a little slow. We'd definitely go back!
Good well prepared and attractively presented food and drinks from a Menu and Wine List offering a wide choice. The service was both helpful and friendly.
Very good and polite service. Lovely food very tasty . Although we were upstairs due to a wine tasting evening. There was still a good atmosphere
Food was very good, service was friendly, atmosphere was lovely and warm, price represented good value for money, and parking was free and convenient. Highly recommended.
Went with Dad as a bit of a birthday treat. Nice food - quality produce. Portion sizes not huge. Service personable and attentive. Would go again.
Great service and lovely food. Also good to see some old friends eating there. Make sure you try the mushrooms with spinach for a starter.
friendly service, and good food. Mike's DJ -ing made it that bit more special, and altogether a very pleasant way to round off the week
staff were all very friendly. the food was excellent. cocktails are lovely.
