A meson (no, not the kind produced in the Large Hadron Collider), is a kind of rustic, down-home restaurant of the type found in regional Spain. Singapore is lucky to have two such traditional eateries in its midst, both under the banner of My Little Spanish Place, and both flying the flag for the time-honoured motto of mi casa es su casa – my house is your house. Unique in Singapore’s Spanish restaurant scene for being helmed by two professional chefs with strong links to homeland Spain, the My Little Spanish Place on Boat Quay is the second outlet for some of the city’s best Spanish cuisine, complete with a jamon (ham) bar and despensa (pantry).

Singapore has a rich and tapestried history closely intertwined with Iberia. While the Portuguese influence has left obvious marks on the city’s culinary scene, and there are indeed plenty of Spanish restaurants and tapas bars to choose from, My Little Spanish Place sets itself apart from the rest by being the gastronomic expression of two founding chefs with strong, outspoken links to Hispanic culture. Maria Sevillano hails from Salamanca, northern Spain, and is the descendant of a long line of Spanish chefs and restaurateurs. Award-winning chef Edward Esmero’s Filipino and Mexican heritage is similarly channeled into this Boat Quay restaurant’s uniquely Spanish offering. And they both dance flamenco and jota respectively.

Esmero and Sevillano have both gathered together family recipes that reflect authentic regional Spanish cuisines. Book a spot down Boat Quay and try a brunch of torrada de esparragos, grilled asparagus with Iberian ham and fried farm eggs on toasted country bread; or a chilled, southern Spanish gazpacho soup – perfect on Singapore’s humid days. Bigger appetites will be satisfied by the all-time house-favourite of cochinillo asado, Spanish-style suckling pig slow-roasted in wine and garlic (for this you’ll have to order hours in advance for a half, and a day in advance for a whole – that’s what Quandoo’s here for).
