About Jim Thompson

As one of the most famous American businessman operating in Asia, the man that almost single-handedly saved Thailand’s silk industry, and as one of Southeast Asia’s most infamous disappearing acts, Jim Thompson’s legend is secure. His legacy, however, endures not only in Thai silk and artefacts or his vanishing, but in a series of restaurants and bars that have gained worldwide attention. Here at Jim Thompson: A Thai Restaurant, the influence of the Jim Thompson style is apparent, from the opulent premises in a Dempsey Hill heritage building along Minden Road, to the impeccably prepared and presented Thai dishes that will please even the most attuned palates. Often praised as at least one of the finest restaurants on Earth, perhaps the best restaurant in Singapore, Jim Thompson: A Thai Restaurant demands a reservation.

Further Information

The first aspect that strikes visitors to Jim Thompson: A Thai Restaurant’s Dempsey Hill premises is the evident attention that has been lavished on every detail of the Minden Road mansion that serves as the restaurant’s home. Many millions have been invested in the decor of this one-of-a-king Singapore venue, with the style obviously deriving from Jim Thompson’s own considered aesthetic – manifest in the designs of his silk garments and renowned Bangkok residence – blending traditional Thai and Southeast Asian flourishes with a soft-edged western modernism that sums to the perfect setting for an upscale Thai meal.

Over 80 classic Thai dishes are available from the a la carte menu at Jim Thompson: A Thai Restaurant, each tested many times by executive chef Jarutus Aumpha and his team of Thai chefs to achieve the perfect balance of Thai cuisine’s salty, sweet, sour and spicy elements. For Singapore’s halal diners, it’s good to know that everything on the menu here is pork-free, with many staples of Southeast Asian vegetarian cuisine available, too. Whether you’re after time-tested classics, innovative takes on Thai cuisine, or dishes straight from Jim Thompson’s monthly Thai cooking contests, they’re all at your disposal. Match your meal with wines by the glass, half-glass or bottle, dispensed using a high tech Italian system, and this Dempsey Hill restaurant is a top-notch destination.

Excellent food, excellent service, excellent place. I went for a birth celebration, they sing you a happy birthday with a guitar and all the ladies from the restaurant dress with traditional Thai attires, and bring you a fruit platter with a candle, really good. 100% recommended

Our family went there to celebrate the family event. The dishes, ambience and services were all good. Because my little kid could not eat spicy dishes, we asked them to make most of them non-spicy. It was my first time to eat non--spicy Thai food, especially non-spicy Tom-Yam-Kung, they were still very delicious.

Very delicious food, great environment and great staff. Whenever I am in Bangkok I would go to Jim Thompson Bangkok. The only things is restaurant should impose on dress code on Guest. No shorts, no gym clothes and no flip flops. Family with childrens should be place at one corner of a restaurant as kids running around destroy the dining experience of others Guests. The dining experience between Jim Thompson Bangkok and Jim Thompson Singapore is incomparable. As an establishments Jim Thompson Singapore should impose on the dress code.

This was my first time at Jim Thompson Singapore. My wife and I chose it for our 28th Anniversary and it was great. Service is not the best thing in Singapore's restaurants, even the very expensive ones, but they were so nice and accommodating. At the end they brought us cut fruits with a candle and had all those young waitresses sing a love song for us. The food was good, not exceptionally great (my wife likes Thai better than me, she loved it). The atmosphere is just the right thing, nice old bungalow form the British Army among trees, very quiet place, great change from all those ultra-modern places at very high floors in the Singapore skyscrapers.

I had my birthday dinner yesterday at Jim Thompson the food was fantastic and in reseaonable portions. Definitely go for the sea bass fried fish it's fantastic and I loved how they took out the flesh of the fish and separated it away from the bones the plating was great! When they sang my birthday song I thought their voices together were lovely ! throughly enjoyed my experience and would definitely visit again!

We ordered mostly vegetarian dishes as we had taken a relative who had restrictions and the food was very good and he very much enjoyed it too. The beef we ordered on the side was outstanding but the chicken satay was pretty standard for the price and we only got four sticks so wouldn't order that again. The prices are definitely on the higher side of what i've seen in Singapore, so would probably book this place for a special occasion next time as its quite expensive. It was also a little hard to get the attention of any staff if we needed anything, and they seldom came to check if we needed anything so that was a bit annoying. The rest was great and would definitely come back.

Environment and food were very good. The only thing I'd mention is that it isn't a child-friendly restaurant at all....my son was crying and someone came and asked me to bring him outside as he was "disturbing other guests". I do understand he was crying and maybe someone may have complained, but the least they could do is apologize and talk to me in a much nicer way, the way it was done wasn't polite or gentle at all. Wouldn't go back because of this....it's Singapore and everywhere here is child-friendly. Also, $12 for a fresh juice was too overpriced...I can buy a few watermelons with this money.

The restaurant is in a heritage property with high ceilings and lot of chandeliers. Thai dancers come regularly which adds to the charm and ambience. It is located on Dempsey hill and you would not feel you are in the city when you enter the area. We were very happy to see a full vegetarian menu and tried mango salad, Khao phod, Phad Thai noodles, Red curry and Steamed Rice. All the dishes were very nice. If you like Thai food it is a must go place. Best Thai dining experience ever. Loved every single time I have visited it.
