Tucked away in the Sydney’s inner west down Illawarra Road you will find Hello Auntie – one of the area's most charming Asian eateries. Combining stylish decor with a fusion of traditional and modern Vietnamese-influenced dishes, Hello Auntie is the place to go for pho in Marrickville, while you will also find a wide range of other Southeast Asian favourites, from small tapas-style dishes to main courses and Asian inspired desserts.
With vintage Vietnamese decorations, exposed brickwork and warm dimmed lighting, this atmospheric restaurant in Marrickville is the ideal location for a cosy meal, romantic date or fun night out. Inspired by traditional Vietnamese cooking, Hello Auntie whips up contemporary Asian dishes with a balance of modernity and motherly care on Illawarra Road in Sydney’s inner west. Everything (except the noodles) is made fresh in Hello Auntie’s kitchen daily, driven by a focus on the absolute best produce available. Designed to be shared, Hello Auntie’s dishes vary in size to suit family eating. There are also cocktails just as creative as the food, beers, wines and Hello Auntie’s trademark slushies – a particular favourite is the whatchamacallit, a mixture of lychees, logan, rambutan and apple juice topped with popping candy for a sweet and refreshing hit very popular with kids (though Hello Auntie offers a version with a shot of rambutan vodka for the adults too)
Gorgeous traditional dishes include banh khot (the Vietnamese answer to pikelets, served with sauteed prawns and smelt roe), ban xeo (sizzling rice pancakes infused with coconut and turmeric) and of course beefy pho – using Auntie’s traditional and time-tested beef stock, the recipe for which is a closely guarded secret. Go the whole hog (or cow) with Hello Auntie’s pho dac biet (‘the lot’), which includes thinly sliced black Angus beef, house-made wagyu meatballs, braised beef brisket and pasture-fed short rib torched to give a heavenly smoky flavour. The bo luc lac is another great choice for beefeaters, seared wagyu in a cold smoked soy, garlic, sesame and wasabi pearl onion marinade, and yes, the bong chuoi vit quay crispy roast duck with banana blossom is just as incredibly delicious as it sounds. As one of Marrickville’s most exciting restaurants it pulls in a crowd from all over Sydney, so we recommend booking for Hello Auntie on Illawarra Road in advance.
Had a great time at Hello Auntie - great atmosphere and delicious food. The service was quick . Particularly loved the ravioli style dish - wonderful!
Amazing as per usual I can never fault them! Perfect
Great Vietnamese food - best in Sydney! Service was amazing... can't fault it. Sometimes a little crowded but still it does not loose the atmosphere.
My all time favourite place to dine out! Food and service are sensational.
When you have a successful restaurant posing modern spins on classic cuisine it's easy to do two things: Pretentiously overprice and be either arrogant or slack in your service. Hello Auntie manages to deliver amazing culinary surprises in a simple yet artistic surrounding with great ambiance whilst the staff remain both attentive & friendly and prices remain more than reasonable. Booking is suggested as this gem was full on the Wednesday night we visited. A couple behind us who didn't have a reservation were seen to quickly and had a table soon after so walk-ins are allowed. The food was amazing, we were a little over-eager and were advised that we'd over ordered and they were right, the portions were large, filling and delicious. We cut back on a couple of dishes and still had to bag half of it to go. This is a great place for sharing plates. Bring your friends and don't over look the drinks menu. Even the softs have some tasty surprising addictions. Can't wait to return.
In Marrickville we are spoiled for great Vietnamese restaurants so when a new supposedly extra special place called Hello Auntie opened up we thought we'd give it a go. To begin we tried to book on the weekend but were told we'd need to book at least a week in advance. Fair enough we thought it's a new place and seems to have created some what of a buzz in the neighbourhood. We ended up booking mid week, no dramas. It was a 6.30pm sitting and we were seated at a table less than a foot from a couple who were obviously on a first date. We could hear every word they said, I actually felt like joining in the chat as it felt like we were at the same table and they seemed like a cute couple. Our first dish came out and it was crispy skinned chicken. It was moist and the skin was deliciously crispy. The second dish came out about 30mins after we finished the first and was the duck pancake. Over all a pretty good version of what most of the other Vietnamese restaurants do, perhaps a hint doughy but over all ok. Last of all and after waiting another 30mins came the twice cooked pork belly. We we really excited about this one as a few reviews we'd had read really talked it up. My fist bite of a 1cm cube piece of pork nearly broke a tooth. The only crackling from this dish would be coming from my teeth shattering. To the wait staffs credit they offered us a free desert to compensate for the pork but by the time the offer came we just wanted to go home. Over all the service was excellent but the food was over priced, the cold bare brick, concrete floors and hard chairs , while good for Hipsters not ideal for the over 30's crowd.
Hello Auntie is a fabulous restaurant, to eat in and to look at. The menu is not your usual Vietnamese menu, rather Vietnamese with a twist. The food is fresh and so delicious, especially anything with duck!! The Staff are wonderful, very attentive and so polite. They were mindful of our dishes taking a little too long so they gave us a starter on the house, which I thought was an example of excellent customer service. The service is usually fast, but as I saw this time round, they really know how to keep their customers happy. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone. I love it!!!
We love Hello Auntie and it's good for kids as well. The food is just right, fresh, good tastes with a mix of traditional dishes done excellently and some new creations. I'm no expert on Vietnamese food but Hello Auntie hits the spot. It is pricey but you can get great value by choosing carefully. I do think they could improve by filtering their table water which to be fair no restaurant seems to do. It would make me rate it higher.
Hello Auntie is always a great experience. The food is sensational, and the whole vibe of the place - the patrons, the layout and design of the restaurant is top class. Most of all the staff are efficient, always friendly and the food comes beautifully presented and on time. I love going to Hello Auntie and taking friends there who haven't experienced it before. Thanks for another great night
All the food was great, especially the banh khot and banh xeo. We had one person at our table who had never had Vietnamese food, but he was very impressed. I preferred the more traditional Vietnamese menu items, but the more modern dishes were also very tasty. Service was friendly, and our waitress was forthcoming with recommendations and helped us order the right amount for our group. We fed 7 people for about $40 a head, including a beer each - a bit more expensive than your everyday Vietnamese restaurant, but Hello Auntie is not your everyday Vietnamese restaurant! Will definitely be back.
