More about the restaurant: Haha Thai

Haha Thai in Ngee Ann City on Orchard Road in Singapore has risen from the embers of the former Ha Ha Ha Thai Seafood Restaurant over on Foch Road. Having shortened the name, the team at the Tanglin restaurant are focusing on bringing the finest Thai flavours to guests in their newly revamped dining room. They have brought their seafood expertise to bear on the new menu here, which leans heavily on fishy flavours, but it’s coupled with an inventive take on other Thai classics too.

Thinking about making a Haha Thai booking?

Thai restaurants in Singapore tend to be a little same-y, but not so at Haha Thai. Finding itself among the shoppers at the Ngee Ann City shopping centre on Orchard Road, the restaurant has had to work hard to establish a loyal following. Serving innovative Thai takes on classic Western dishes as well as classic favourites has made this a go-to place for younger diners in the city. The restaurant keeps things interesting with their impressive range of seafood and shellfish-orientated dishes, drawing on their years in a former incarnation as Ha Ha Ha Thai.

The name might sound funny (or like someone found something funny) but it masks a deeper meaning. Haha Thai takes its name from the Thai pronunciation of the number five – ha in Thai. It is a tribute to the 19th century Thai king, King Rama V, known to be a very good chef. With such royal pedigree, the kitchen, staffed with chefs from southern Thailand, have their work cut out for them and they are responding with admirable enthusiasm. Aside from classics like pad Thai, bak mee and tom yum talay soup, they are also reworking traditionally western dishes like the classic tiramisu to give the dish new, Thai life (we didn’t think you could improve a tiramisu either, shows what we know). The team at Haha Thai in Tanglin’s Ngee Ann City shopping centre on Orchard Road are doing everything they can to showcase the kitchen’s skill and ambition. It’s no laughing matter.
