For adventurous foodies willing to take a short jaunt south of Manchester, West Didsbury’s Gurkha Grill is an unmissable destination. This restaurant, along Burton Road, is renowned for offering up a very niche specialty indeed: Nepalese cuisine, with border-crossing northern Indian cuisine thrown in for good measure. It’s been a long climb to the top, but this recently refurbished restaurant has firmly planted its flag at the very peak of the West Midlands food chain. Let Quandoo give you a helping hand up to the heady heights of Gurkha Grilll – reserve a spot at the top now.
The ghurkas are the famously fearless soldiers who hark from the mountains of Nepal. We suggest you arm yourself with a similar fearlessness – when have we ever offered bad advice? – and climb to the very top of Gurkha Grill’s dizzyingly diverse menu. This specialty Nepalese restaurant in along West Didsbury’s Burton Road, a short hike south of Manchester city centre, also offers good Indian cuisine too, in a nod to the two nations’ shared borders. But it’s for the Gurkhali and Gurkha Specials that you’ll really want to conquer.
The Ghurkali are simply the house recommendations, and take in ingredients, flavours, and aromas that unite Nepali and Indian cuisine. The very hot chilli chicken is a classic for the truly brave culinary ghurkas in your company, while unusual dishes like the lawsoon kukhura or khasi (garlic chicken or garlic lamb) are still dangerous enough to satisfy your inner adventurer. The Ghurka Grill specials are where this West Didsbury restaurant really shines. If you only have one chance to journey south of Manchester and book a table at this Burton Road outpost, then you have to pick one of these dishes, prepared specially by the master chef using a home-ground spice masala. Just for example, the Lhotse haans (tender duck finished in a wok with ginger, green pepper and spring onion) will take your breath away.
Amazing food and even better service. The restaurant was busy and the the atmosphere was great. Our waiter couldn’t have been more helpful. Definitely will go back again soon.
Excellent food and great service. Highly recommended. We had mixed vegetarian starter and fish tikka to start. Fish cooked to perfection and for main chicken karahi chicken tikka balti and salmon in mustard and coriander. All beautifully cooked. Was great birthday treat and will return before my next birthday !
Overall a great experience! The staff were very welcoming and attentive throughout our visit. The food was delicious and reasonably price. We'll definitely be going back!
There were four of us in our party and we all ordered different things. The food was excellent and the service was excellent. We will definitely be returning again in the near future
We enjoyed an excellent meal with good service. Staff were very friendly and efficient without being rushed. Our starters (tandoori chicken and shish kebab) arrived with fresh salad garnish and a selection of chutney. Main course curries (pepper chicken and pander sangrila) were both extremely tasty. Pilau rice was excellent with whole spices rather than the food colouring that often features in lesser restaurants, and the garlic naan was fresh and light. Together with a pint each our bill came to under £40 (£36 from memory, bit don't quote me) for the two of us.
I have never had a bad meal from Kashmiri Spice. The food is always excellent....that is when you get what you ask for. Unfortunately this time they made a mistake with my order and delivered the wrong pizza. What I ordered was a vegetarian hot one but what I got was a plain vegetarian, which has pineapple (yuk). I didn't bother to complain but I'm sure that if I had they would have rectified the mistake so I would srtill rate them highly.
Fantastic experience as ever at Gurkha Grill. Delicious food and lovely atmosphere. Good value. Very friendly staff who were helpful and didn't rush us! Will recommend and go back
Went to the Gurkha Grill for my birthday with eighteen friends staff and food was excellent. Brilliant night out. I would recommend it to anybody.
The staff were all very very friendly. They were very knowledgable about their dishes.Even though it was Friday night and very busy they didn't rush us which was lovely.A great restaurant. Will definitely go back again.
The food we had was absolutely fantastic and extremely good value for money. The staff were friendly and extremely attentive. Well worth a visit and certainly the best of West Didsbury's Nepalese restaurants
