Besides being named, short and sweet, after the gingery Southeast Asian plant that’s an essential ingredient in the classic Thai tom yum goong and tom kha kai soups, Galangal is an award-winning legend in Perth’s restaurant landscape. The magic lies in Galangal’s ability to remain down to earth, offering a menu packed with traditional Thai dishes, while elevating the art of Thai cuisine to glamorous heights. The venue, up on the Mount Hawthorn stretch of Scarborough Beach Road, speaks volumes about the quality that the kitchen offers, too, with a dining room decked out in peerless style – white, starched tablecloths against rich, dark, wood-panelled walls. For a taste of Galangal’s upscale Thai dining experience, a reservation is essential.
These days, Galangal is more than a rising star among Perth restaurants, Southeast Asian or otherwise. Having taken out the national award for Best Thai Restaurant in the 2014 Savour Awards For Excellence competition, the reputation of this Mount Hawthorn Thai restaurant is secure. The food here is sensational and, originating from the so-called Land of Smiles, you can expect the service to match, each and every time. Open for dinner from 6pm to 10pm, Tuesday to Sunday, the restaurant’s excellence and relatively limited opening hours have made these tables up on Scarborough Beach Road some of the most sought after in the city. And what supports this fame?
The food. The delicious nouveau Thai cuisine that this restaurant serves up with endearing, understated artfulness. Start with the ‘Galloping Horses’, mar hor, balancing the sweet, savoury and nutty flavours of duck, ground shrimp and cashews atop pineapple slices, or go for the curious fusion of Thai-style beef carpaccio with larb dressing. Perth’s Southeast Asian seafood fans are recommended the pla rad prik, barramundi with a spicy garlic, chilli and tamarind sauce; vegetarians will love the wok-fried Asian greens or classic veggie pad Thai; even something as simple as fried rice with king prawns or the stir-fried beef Scotch fillet with chilli, Thai basil and snake beans go gourmet here in Mount Hawthorn.
Great food, pleasant staff, courteous service and nice decor a fun evening in the company of good friends who had never been to Galangal before. Will definitely dine there again.
Wonderful service, such friendly staff, food was awesome (definitely value for money). The owner even came out to say hi to us and other patrons. 100% will be going back.
Best Thai in Perth. Highly recommend their duck curry and whole fish
Amazing service on Valentine’s Day even though they were flat out. Food was divine we will be back for sure. Could not fault a thing.
Our second visit to Galangal and well worth it! The food is beautifully presented, flavoursome and served in some interesting serving ware. Overall fantastic. The pork belly was as delicious as the first time, the red duck curry and wok greens perfect. I read a lot of reviews about Galangal and the common negative thread was around the service and wait time for clearing tables. Well the reviews have worked, although the staff may be a little over enthusiastic now, but I'm sure they will find a happy balance. We will definitely go back and I can highly recommend Galangal to those who love Thai food!!
This is not the first time we have been to Galangal but I think it might be the last. The service last night was terrible, we must have been asked 6 times if we were ready to order after we actually have ordered by every waitress in the restaurant including the Maître D seating us. We ordered drinks and had to follow them the first time as they took ages to arrive at the table and when they did they were extra and wrong. The second order still forgot drinks when serving the table. The table had little space for four people and our assortment of dishes but the wait staff had no idea how to arrange the table to enable everything to fit, to be honest it was laughable. When the food arrived to be honest it was as expected, good tasty food. I wasn't overly impressed with the pig hair still on the pork belly so that was an immediate put off but otherwise the curry's were tasty, could have been warmer but very tasty none the less. All in all we will look at an alternate Thai restaurant in the neighbourhood which definitely rated much higher last time we were there. Definitely not the same Galangal we first went to 12 months ago.
We had a lovely dining experience on a Saturday evening at Galangal. The food was delicious, of note was the soft shell crab as an entree and for mains the pineapple prawn and pork belly were the standnouts. The coconut icream and mango with sticky rice was a pleasant dessert. Service was good with meals out quickly, staff were friendly and welcoming. One minor detraction was that staff forgot to bring the extra water required as one dish was rather hot and it was needed urgently by one of our party! Aside from that everything was great and Galangal is highly recommnded.
A large restaurant with very nice decor, including carpet and tablecloths (good noise absorbers). Generous serves of top quality food, that is more imaginative than your usual Thai offerings. However the service was wanting from several different wait staff. We were seated quickly and given water immediately but had to wait a while to order, possibly because we were 30 mins late and it was now very busy. So we ordered our pre dinner drinks, wine, entrees and mains all at once. The entrees arrived first, THEN the pre dinner drinks (couldn't cancel them as we saw them being made as the entree turned up), immediately followed by the white wine. It was disappointing that I had to ask for a wine cooler that others had, as the wine would obviously not be drunk for a little while yet. We asked for the mains to be held back a bit and they were. We ate our delicious meal and the busy period subsided. Our empty plates sat on our table a tad too long. What was especially disappointing was that people behind us were served food, then the waiters walked straight past our obviously finished plates. 2 different persons asked us if we were interested in desert. Our water glasses were topped up eventually and then another 2 times. Yet despite that, the empty cocktail glass, that was finished a hour previously, was still on the table when we left. The manager/ bar attendant apologized spontaneously for the delay in pre dinner drinks as she was working alone. It was a Wednesday night and the place was full, so I recommend you book.
Food was really yummy. I also like the new restaurant. A big improvement from previous location. Ambiance was great. Food came really quickly. However, the service could do some improvement. Firstly, we're 4 adults but we're only given 2 menus? When I wanted to ask for 2 more menus, no one was in sight (we're seated at the very back table) so I had to actually stand up and walked to the staff near the kitchen area to ask for the menus. Moreover, I ordered Bangkok mojito for my drinks. When the waiter came serving the drinks, he didn't say the name of my drink properly and kept saying something like lemon cocktails or whatever, and I said "No one ordered this drink" And instead of saying "Ok I'll go and check again" he insisted "No no this is for your table" and just put the drink down to the table which I found was very odd and very persistent even though I already said no one ordered this drink. So I said "I ordered Bangkok mojitos. Is that what you mean?" Then he replied "Ah yes yes Bangkok mojitos" I found this very unprofessional. Lastly, at about 7.40pm after we finished our food, we ordered some desserts. We just literally ordered 2 mins away, then a waitress came over and said we had to vacate the table by 8pm. But we said to her, hey where's the desserts? We just ordered it. Could you serve it now? If you serve it now, then we will gladly vacate the table ONCE we finished. She seemed quite surprised and said no one was rushing us, just take our time bla bla bla...but really in our opinion, what she was saying was indeed rushing us and told us politely to go as quickly as possible. No one told me about this 2 hrs seating limit when I made the booking (online and call to confirm). Will I be back...yeah probably. The food kinda save my opinion about this restaurant.
Delicious food and great service on a very busy night. We had asked for a table in quiet area and our waitress acknowledged our request had been received and had done her best to accommodate this. However the noise level was high!! Still it's the food that is the standout here. Galloping horses are a must and we tried the soft shell crab with watermelon for the first time. This will now be a favourite. The mussamun curry with sweet potato was a taste sensation. If you love Thai food you must try Galangal
