Far from the hustle, bustle and downright hassle of Sydney city, Frank & Blanco have made a name for themselves as a Mexican restaurant and cantina that is as bold, loud and beautiful as the best that any metropolis can offer. Their first foray found a home in Sutherland, and their second outlet has landed even more remotely out here in historic Picton. Setting up shop on the southern fringes of the town centre on Argyle Street AKA the Old Hume Highway, almost opposite Menangle Street that leads down to the station, Frank & Blanco’s modern, tapas-style Mexican menu and creative cocktails are set to invigorate this small NSW community’s foodie scene.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks are all part and parcel of the Frank & Blanco experience. For a small town like Picton, the opportunity to forgo your usual eggs benny in favour of pulled pork on Turkish bread with grilled apricots, Persian feta and pico de gallo come Saturday or Sunday morning is going to raise some eyebrows, but when Frank’s churros, the chorizo plate (yep, with eggs your way), and the Notorious P.I.G. torta with Mexican slaw, spiced pulled pork, American streaky bacon, a couple of fried eggs and spicy sriracha aioli get settled in the town centre’s little but lovely locality, Picton residents will be waxing their mustachios with pleasure in no time. Lunch keeps the tempo up with Frank’s signature burritos paked with garlic infused rice, tomato salsa, black beans, tasty cheese and ‘the protein of the week’ – just ask (or don’t, and be pleasantly surprised).
Sharing is caring, and eating socially and ostentatiously is the Mexican way, It’s a tradition that Frank & Blanco upholds in its Sutherland outlet, and it’s going to be the way here in Picton, too. That’s why the restaurant has laid on a big range of sharing plates like tacos of all sorts (pork, vegetarian black bean, spicy chicken, octopus), torta, corn on the cob, grilled globe artichokes and salads that you can battle over and wash down with cocktails like the Drunken Mule with blanco tequila and housemade ginger ale, Frank’s signature mai tai, the Frank & Blanco espresso martini, and the southern US inspired Stout Old Fashioned – anejo tequila, stout beer syrup and orange bitters infused with hickory smoke. Diners from Sydney and beyond should take the trip down to Picton just for the chef’s signature dish – the ruby tuna ceviche. Ceviche, a traditional Peruvian delicacy, is doing the trending rounds at the moment and here at Frank & Blanco this version is amazing. Fresh raw tuna simply marinated in a blanco tequila and lime vinaigrette, served with edible flowers and tortilla tostadas.
Super staff, funky cocktails, spectacular food and a great vibe made our dinner experience one to remember. We will be back! Be sure to book.
The food was delicious and great value. Service was very punctual and attentive. I also love the decor and it’s so great to have a local restaurant offering something unique. Had a great time and will be back again.
Really enjoyed my experience at frank and blanco food was delish and the service was great I will definitely be going back for a soft shell crab taco 😍
Great food and lovely service. We cant wait to go back and try the $5 taco night. It fun to find a Newtown vibe in sleepy old Picton.
Had a great time. The staff were so lovely and accommodating, always smiling which makes such a difference between a good and a bad experience. The food was good - I want the recipe for the black eyed peas lol! Oh and I also want the wall mural done in my lounge room haha. Overall we all enjoyed ourselves. It was a little bit too much salt and spice for me with most things on the menu, but that is not your problem - let's face it, its a Mexican restaurant lol. But I managed to find some things to eat. The only thing I would change is that maybe there needs to be a detailed description of just what things are. Its all quite alien to most people and you have no idea what you are getting - or maybe a pic of what it is. I had no idea I was ordering a burger lol. Otherwise, fabulous.
The menu is not big but the food is not your average Mexican - it's more interesting. A great range of starters with fresh hot homemade corn chip strips and guacamole that didn't look quite fresh but tasted good. The "black eyed peas" dish looked nothing like described but tasted better than it looked! There are no beef tacos or nachos on the menu but the chef did make a pulled beef taco for my husband on request which was "delicious". The choice of tacos included vegetarian, crispy chicken, pulled pork, soft-shelled crab and fish. The "taco trio" of your choice is a good option. The sav blanc "sangria" with pineapple juice was refreshing but just tasted like spritzy pineapple juice. The beer and red wine were fine. 2 starters, 4 mains, a jug of sangria, 2 beers and a glass of red wine between 4 people was $150. The experience was interesting but we are not culinary connoisseurs and it's a long way from home (40km from Campbelltown) and the restaurant was uncomfortably cold inside so we probably wouldn't go again.
We chose to"trust the chef " from the menu choices and we were not disappointed. The food was awesome, fresh and served in good time, great atmosphere and excellent service. We are local to the area and will definitely be dining there on a regular basis.
Food was great and service was friendly and attentive. Servings were very generous and not too spicey. We enjoyed our dining experience and will return with friends and visitors. Particularly liked the online booking service provided. Thanks for making our family night out enjoyable.
Took a long time to get served. Tried to order tortilla chips with guacamole, they were out of guacamole (um, walk to the IGA across the road and buy some avocados??) tried to order the Chefs dish, sorry we are out of salmon- we didn't receive our seafood order. I'm a pescatarian so there was only the vegetarian tacos that I could really order.... Having said that they were beautiful and I had 6 of them. Was a little disappointed but might give them one more go.
Good service. Good food. Friendly staff. Would have liked to see a bit more veg or salad on the plate but maybe you are expected to order a salad as well if you want veg. Even a bit more garnish as lacked a little presentation. Noise level increased later in the night.
