The food was delicious and the service immaculate. This is one of our favourite restaurants and we’ve never been disappointed. I would certainly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting York.
Fantastic food, brilliant staff, consistently good service, great atmosphere. Been coming for years always a highlight. Our favourite restaurant when we are in York. Highly recommend. Mike & Chris Overfield
Excellent service and lovely food the asparagus as a starter was particularly good. The staff are particularly pleasant and Côte is our go to place when we just need to have a meal.
lovely food and very pleasant service The restaurant was very clean and well presented T he staff were helpful and friendly. I shall continue to visit
Having visited the same restaurant chain in London and Newcastle, my wife and I were very happy to try out the York venue. We were not disappointed. As usual, the service was very good - the staff are attentive and friendly without being 'in your face' - and the meal (the early bird menu) was its usual self: varied and appealing. The prices are reasonable and we also had a bottle of wine with our meal. The surroundings were attractive and clean - indeed, everything you could want was there. The only quibble I would have is with the automatic addition of a service charge. I understand you can ask for it to be removed but I think it is presumptuous to add it automatically - although when we checked, the service charge does go to the staff. However, as a matter of principle, I prefer to decide how good the service was and determine what the staff get. Notwithstanding that point, we would have no hesitation about eating at one of these restaurants again and would recommend them to others for their overall value, quality of food and friendly service. We could not fault the food, it was amazing! Quality, choice of ingredients, the way it was cooked and presented were second to none so congratulations to the Chef and to Cote! The staff was very customer focused and friendly. 4 stars instead of 5 due to three small issues. 1) On arrival, our Kir was so weak it could have been a glass of pale Rosé. It didn't look or taste like Kir. However, this was put right on the second one ordered by two of us and one was offered complimentary to one of my daughters whose 40th birthday it was so thank you. 2) Side dishes were ordered but not served. We had to chase them and by the time we got them, we nearly had finished our main dish. 3) My 9 year old fancied a little cucumber and tomato salad as a starter but she couldn't have it so had to have some glazed carrots instead as she doesn't like green leaves which your green salad is. I cannot understand what the problem was when your restaurant, like any others, have cucumber and tomatoes in the kitchen. Cote ticks many boxes except the one for flexibility, you are not as accommodating as other restaurants in your league which is a pity.
We booked this meal to celebrate my birthday, taking advantage of the free Kir royale. On entering the restaurant we were very quickly greeted and shown to a table. The menu was quickly delivered and the free drinks were served. We made our choices from the menu and enjoyed a bowl of very tasty and juicy olives while we waited for our mains. I chose the fish parmentier and my husband the steak-frites. We were both happy with our choices. The parmentier was packed with fish and prawns and there was just enough topping without it being too heavy. My husband enjoyed his steak-frites, which he has ordered on previous occasions. He was very happy with the quality of the steak which was very tender. We then shared the cheese platter instead of having a dessert. Having chosen this option before we were aware how generous the portions are so we opted to share and were quite full! The service was, as always, very friendly and efficient. We will certainly return.
Not as good as previous visit about 6 weeks ago. Variations in culinary expertise, not as good this time. No bread with the starters. Lunch/early evening menu has been split into 2 price ranges, making it not as appealing. Less choice, was hard to choose something. Vegetarian option sounded dull (though we were not vegetarian and didn't try it) Service from waiters was ok. Alarm went off during service for around 30 seconds, and no members of staff announced what the problem was so diners (including us) were left unaware as to whether there was a fire or smoke emergency. That should have happened but staff kept it to themselves. We both had mussels to start and these were tiny, very tiny but tasty, again no bread with the starter! Why!? The main was minute steak and it was a bit grisly and over seasoned. Fries were nice, as was spinach. Service was quick and suitable for business lunch. I brought a friend for lunch today based on a positive experience with a larger group a few weeks ago. I will not be rushing back...York has an abundance of choice and I really think they have got to be consistent and do well what they do, rather than just (as it seemed today) try to grab the Easter business from Tourists without any consideration of return visits. There were only a few diners in there today, so keep the ones that live locally and will return if the standards and prices are maintained.
The food was excellent as always, the only problem we felt like we were living in North America as the amount of time we were asked how our food was, first time we had hardly had a mouthful so did not know how it was, then one time when my husband had just put a mouthful of food into his mouth so could not answer, on the 3rd time, we did ask why do we have to be asked so many time? he said " well how do we know if everything is ok" All we have to do is tell our server. In Europe they NEVER ask, as know the food is good and should be good. 3 times was very annoying, if it continues we may not return even though we love the restaurant.
This particular branch of Cote LOOKS small from the outside, but don't be fooled, it goes back a LONG way and can happily seat at least 100 diners. As always, the set menu offers very good value and the staff are friendly, attentive and efficient. Perhaps because it is not in Central London (where the ones I normally visit are) and it was a fairly quiet, early mid week visit, or perhaps simply because "Northerners" are generally friendlier and warmer from the outset than "Southerners", we were made to feel like long lost friends rather than customers, even though this was actually our first visit. I would highly recommend it.
