Comuna Cantina’s two locations – here in Brisbane’s CBD and in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast – are true clubhouses devoted to Latin American culinary culture. The menu ranges from market treats and street snacks to Venezualan and Colombian arepas, Mexican tacos and Mesoamerican-style burgers, salads, sides and salsas galore. It’s all best approached with one of Comuna Cantina’s many, varicolored cocktail concoctions in hand, of course, and you’d best book ahead. This crazy busy spot in the Queen Street mall – accessed from Albert Street as well – has very limited opening times. Seats are sought after.
Let’s tackle the long conga line of Comuna Cantina’s menu piece by delicious piece. Starting small but with no less a bang are the CBD restaurant’s street snacks and market treats, built from the ground up atop those ancient, taken-for-granted South American staples that have become familiar to anyone that eats: corn and potatoes. Here, simple grilled corn on the cob is spiked with chipotle aioli and queso fresco. The old bowl of wedges becomes a bowl of sweet potato chips served with aioli and queso fresco and sprinkled with rosemary and smoked paprika. Less familiar starches – plantains – are dunked in guacamole and pico de gallo. And we haven’t even really fired up to what else is on offer at this essential Brisbane eatery...
Latin American locals in Brisbane will drool at the sight and smell of Comuna Cantina’s arepas, taco pocket’s packed with pulled pork, marinated prawns, roasted sweet potato and other fillings that have become a staple among Venezuelan and Columbian communities. The classic tacos with chargrilled chicken, pulled pork or chia and coconut-crumbed fish with pineapple salsa are themselves enough of a drawcard to pull hordes of Mexican food fans through the Albert Street and Queen Street mall’s entranceways. If you’re all taco’d out and hungry for a Latin American-flavoured restaurant in the CBD, whack the same fillings in a burger and wash it all down with some of Comuna’s fantastic house cocktails!

Excellent food and cocktails. Daily happy hour is great value - includes espresso martinis, margaritas, basic spirits and house wines. Sweet potato chips are amazing.
Great vibe, food and drinks came out fast and most importantly wonderful staff. We had a great time at this venue. Food and drinks were great
Outstanding food, cocktails and service. I had about 15 people come with me for an event last week, every single one of us were impressed and will definitely be returning.
The food was really good and the service was polite but not super attentive. It was busy this day and the first time we Comuna Cantina it out it was quiet and we had the "feed me" option which required a lot of staff interaction. This time we just ordered off the menu so the whole experience was different. It was a bit of a bummer that my special request for a flower to be put on our table for our anniversary wasn't honoured. We did see flowers on some tables but not on the one we were seated at. Didn't want to make a fuss about it so I didn't mention it. I'm not sure if the staff themselves see those requests or not or how it works. It would have been a nice touch to at least have that little request honoured. My husband ordered a drink, a Mexican meatball arepa meal, and I ordered a Mexican meatball street taco, an abundance bowl, and we split an order of chicken strips. I liked my Mexican meatball taco fine but my husband really liked his. The meatballs were cooked through but a little on the hard side in my taco. I liked my abundance bowl a lot better. The flavors were bright and light, great for a summer day. The chicken strips are an improvement from the chicken bites they used to have. Bigger pieces of meat make the dish less greasy and let the chicken shine rather than just the breading. Overall, a good meal, with lots of good gluten free options which is hard to find anywhere much less in the city.
The staff is super friendly, and seem to have fun at their jobs, which is nice for customers to see. We got the "feed me with cocktails" deal off of Groupon and it was worth it for sure! We started off with chicken bites followed by tacos and arepas and then we were treated to some of the staff favorites of the abundance sala" and grilled corn with herbs and cheese. We wish we could of eaten more because it was so good, but the portions were a decent size and we were getting full. We didn't get cocktails but the staff made sure we got non alchoholic drinks instead, with my hubby getting a lemonade with lemon juice (to simulate a Lemon Squash) and I got the strawberry pineapple aqua fresca. I was surprised the place was so quiet but we were there around 3PM, well before the dinner rush. We will come again, so please have more specials on groupon!
Overall, good experience with a few factors to consider for next time. - It would have been beneficial if our waiter notified us of any specials prior to commencing ordering. - We also had a vegetarian amongst our entourage, unfortunately her particular requests were not met with any severity and left unfulfilled. Her experience unfortunately led to being disappointing overall. However, for the rest of our entourage, we were quite satisfied. Overall, we were quite satisfied by the team at Comuna!
Fabulous fresh food and super friendly service but I'd recommend checking you're paying for the right table because I ended up paying for someone else's, more expensive, order. Admittedly I was a little distracted at the time but it was only because I asked for a tax invoice and checked it later that I noticed the error. Would be nice if they'd run through the bill before charging customers. I'll be sure to return for more tacos though!
Amazing cocktails, taste great and look amazing for the Instagram feed. Food size is huge, even snacks were the size of a main and the sweet potato chips are to die for. Waitresses and Waiters were very friendly and helped a lot with good cocktail choices
Cute little corner restaurant in the city, also right above Albert St parking so awesome to park within 5mins of this place. Food was amazing and fresh, my taco's were bursting with flavour so yummm. Waiters were welcoming and helpful, service was fast friendly and would definitely recommend and be back for more!
