About Armenian Taverna & Restaurant
At the Albert Square end of Princess Street, before it descends into drunken, school-leaver silliness by the Village, is a restaurant that is old enough to be the dad of those A-level celebrating teens. Established in 1968, Armenian Taverna is one of Manchester’s oldest restaurants. This tiny spot in the centre of town is unassuming-looking, but the menu is anything but. Bringing the meaty, flavoursome dishes that define Armenian cooking to Mancunians for nearly fifty years.

Mancunians (and Brummies, Geordies, Scousers and everyone else for that matter) will tell you that the British media is London-centric to a fault. The northern dining scene is overlooked in favour of the (more readily accessible) restaurants on the national press’ doorstep. Consider for a moment then that Albert Square’s Armenian Taverna has featured in that most North-London metropolitan elite of all North-London metropolitan elite broadsheets, The Guardian. Yes, Princess Street’s own Armenian Taverna managed to lure The Guardian’s food critic up north and was rewarded with effusive praise. But if knitted cottage cheese fans are not enough to impress, the food here certainly will.
The food at Armenian Taverna is enough to convert the neighsayers, put off by the Princess Street’s restaurant’s retro interior. Once diners have found Armenian Taverna (something that can be tricky even for native Mancs) they are treated to a menu of meaty delights and vegetarian delectables. The food is hearty, filling and above all else tasty – this is not a restaurant that fits easily with modern Manchester’s stark minimalism, and that might well be its biggest charm. The food comes first here, and for diners around Albert Square, they can rest assured that after nearly 50 years in the business the team at Armenian Taverna know exactly what they’re doing.
We live in Tunbridge Wells in Kent and always visit this wonderful restaurant when we visit Manchester. We recommend it to all our friends. Another excellent meal on this visit. M & M Tunbridge Wells
Lovely staff and great food - Try the Georgian wine it is a game changer ! really made a point of being helpful and polite highly recommended and I will be back !
Super food, great service at a reasonable price, and now I have to pad it out to twenty five words which destroys the original message.
I lived in Manchester for several years, this was always my favorite place to eat. The food is great and very reasonably priced and the service is great.
We visited Armenian restaurant to try something new in Manchester and it was out first outing since we had our daughter. Me, my wife and our baby daughter visited the restaurant in the evening. The ambience was excellent but as it is in the lower ground it was a bit of a hassle to take the pram and pushchair but it was totally worth the effort. Right from the start all went well, we were greeted and made comfortable by the waiters. I would specially want to thank Victoria for her excellent hospitality. She gave us an overview of the menu and she suggested us some of the most traditional Armenian food which was excellent. We had the meat platter to share for 2 which had a good variety, tasty and sufficient for 2. The Amaretto for an aperitif was a good start. For the main course I had the Lamb Goulash and my wife had the Chef's Mixed Khorovac. Both were excellent. We would definitely visit this restaurant again.
We tried the cold vegetarian mezzeh and it was very good. The restaurant have large selecton of char grilled meats, fish and vegetables, you can see the chef through a glass window all on steamy smoke doing his work. The char grilled marineted lamb chops I had were very well seasoned with herbs or marinated. It was nicely cooked with nice chunks of meat and still juicy. Wine was tasty. A kind, attentive , helpfull staff. We asked for a swap of potatoes for cus cus for grilled salmon in marinated cabage (very nice) and it arrived flavoured with some herbs that gave it a citrus like taste to go very well with fish. We had a table for two, which was medium-small. The staff managed well to keep it tidy all the time. Background music is probably modern music of respective area where the cuisine comes from.
I took a group of family members to celebrate the visit of a second cousin from New Zealand. The atmosphere was welcoming and the decor adds to that. During dinner, our second cousin was delighted to hear from his father, an ex-pat from Manchester originally, that he remembered celebrating his 18th in the same Taverna. The food was lovely, as ever though a little too hot/chilli to be completely authentic Armenian food on this occasion - perhaps a new chef? The meal was rounded off with 20-year old Armenian cognac - very special indeed and warmed delightfully before our eyes by the host. A wonderful evening and highly recommended to anyone who likes Greek and Middle Eastern food but is searching for a slightly different angle.
The restaurant was tucked away and was really quiet but staff were lovely and couldn't do enough for us. The house wine was very good value at £8.50 for a half carafe. The best thing about the place is definitely the food - the portions are huge and it is all very tasty. I would recommend the mixed grill or the minced lamb with pitta and fried egg, and definitely the meat mezze for two to start (we actually shared between three and it was plenty!). Overall this is a hidden gem, I would definitely go back.
Friendly staff, nice ambience and delicious food. We were a group of nine people, all fully satisfied with our dishes. We shared a vegetarian and a meat platter with bread as a starter, which we enjoyed a lot. All main courses (varying from vegetarian cous cous to lamb goulash) were served at the same time, well cooked and delicious in flavour. Finishing off our meal with baklava, tea and Armenian coffee, we concluded that this restaurant is a place to visit again.
Arrived 45 minutes late for a pre-theatre supper, due to a motorway foul-up. Staff and chefs were excellent, both in the speed with which they served our first mezzeh and then the main meal, and the quality of the food. Instead of an hour and three-quarters for supper we finished up with less than an hour and they were great at making sure we didn't miss the start of the play and didn't finish up with indigestion!
This was an all round very enjoyable experience. Not being familiar with Armenian cuisine we were advised to choose the banquet and were not disappointed (£20 per head). A great selection of starters and mains and complimented by a superb bottle of Lebanese wine. Staff very friendly and the service exceptional with the restaurant surroundings adding to the overall charm. A great find and highly recommended.
This is one of Manchester's best kept secrets. From the minute we walked in we were made very welcome by the staff who took our coats. The menu is unlike anything you will see anywhere else in town with unique selection of dishes. The food was great, the service was great, the atmosphere was great. I much recommended place to eat.
We visited this restaurant on 11th July - a return visit for one of us but a new experience for the other. We were given a warm welcome. The service was excellent and the food brilliant. I have never been disappointed at this atmospheric 'taverna' & will certainly be returning, as will my friend - a new convert!!
As in the old days, we were made very welcome, the meal and wine were superb, we were served a complimentary liqueur at the end and it was a perfect start to the evening. Thanks to everyone for their efficiency. Music was a little loud but we got used to it, or they turned down. Tim
Lovely food with good sized portion. The restaurant decor is gorgeous and the music playing was lively (I was dancing to myself while eating my food). The service was amazing and the waitress who served us was lovely and we talked about all kinds of things. I will definitely come back again.
We have been to this restaurant on a number of occasions. The food has been excellent on all visits. The staff are really friendly and helpful. It was also the first time of a couple who were dining with us and they have said they definitely want to go back
A varied menu, eclectic wine list and a friendly welcome. If you enjoy Turkish or Greek food you will feel right at home here, especially if you are fond of lamb! I'm not surprised they remain in business after nearly fifty years. I will return.
We had the Armenian meat banquet, starter was really good but I was disappointed with the main. The menu described it as chicken, pork, lamb chops & mince lamb. We got mainly chicken, one very small skinny lamb chop each, a minced lamb sausage & no pork. Very disappointing compared to previous visits, especially as I raved about it to my partner who'd not been before. :-(
Loved this place, gorgeous food, friendly and attentive staff, cozy atmosphere, some dishes are a little pricey but they are still delicious, also Kid's meals are way to big for little ones, could do with smaller portions. Overall, enjoyed our meal, would love to go back.
The five of us really enjoyed our visit to the Armenian, the food was excellent and we had very good service. It was rather quiet being a Monday lunchtime but we will definitely go again in the future
Service was excellent. The waiter recommended a Georgian wine which wasn't on the menu and was thoroughly enjoyed by my guests. Unfortunately the food was just mediocre. The hot pitta with the sharer starter was a great touch and the lentil soup was nice. Seabass main course had far too many bones and Chef's Mixed Khorovac had no real flavour. My guests stated that they had eaten far better elsewhere.
Food was absolutely fabulous. We had the banqueting menu and particularly enjoyed the starter plater and the minced lamb sausage which comes with the main. Service was quick and cheerful. Will definitely be going back.
We had a lovely meal the staff were attentive and friendly and the prices were very reasonable so all in all a great night out , to quote Arni "we'll be back "
This is the friendliest loveliest restaurant on the face of the planet. Helpings are generous and the flavours are delicious! Third time there, welcomed like a longtime regular. Will go again very soon.
Absolutely fantastic food, great menu, perfect night for different cuisine to standard chain restaurants. Would definitely recommend and will be returning next time I'm in Manchester. Wonderful quality food, can't praise it enough.
One of the best restaraunts I have been to for a long time. The food, staff, and ambience were excellent. Would recommend to anyone. Shared with family for Mother's Day, will return.
Great food, great service and great atmosphere. Meat was very tender and tasty. I have been here a few times and it's as good as it was every previous visit, love it!
A lovely welcome and, knowing we were short on time, the food was promptly delivered. We had the Armenian Banquet which involved a wide range of very tasty and nicely presented dishes.
Amazing food, friendly service, and delicious cognac. We ordered the 10yo, but they had run out, so let us have the 15yo for no extra charge, which was a real treat.
Amazing food and service. our waitress was able to make some recommendations as we had never eaten here before. We had a lovely evening here! will be back very soon :)
Fantastic food- a great variety of freshly prepared and delicious food. Super friendly staff who made us feel very welcome. Thank you so much for giving us such a great evening!
Splendid food, efficient and friendly service. The ambience is a real blast from the past, but it works. And discovered the amazing Georgian lemonade. Will definitely make this a regular visit.
We were impressed by the food. We had a selection of starters and we had loads to eat. The service was excellent. The decor hasn't changed in about 30 years. It's almost come back into fashion!
Very friendly and lively staff. Will be coming back and will definitely recommend to my friends! Food was outstanding and great location for NYE. Overall, we enjoyed our experience. 😁🙋🏻
The food was very good we had the Armenian banquet which was plentifull and very tasty the house wine was good and a , reasonable price and the staff very friendly, well worth a visit.
I love this restaurant and always eat here when in Manchester. The staff were great, attentive although left us alone to enjoy meal at our own pace. The mixed sharing starter is a particular favourite.
Delightful, cosy atmosphere, wonderfully varied and delicious food, fantastic Georgian wine, welcoming, charming and attentive staff, incredibly reasonable prices. One of my two or three favourite restaurants in Manchester.
We went very early so were the only people in there (that's a plus as far as I'm concerned). Food was good and not expensive. Would definitely go again.
Wow, how have I only just find this place. Going down the stairs is like being transported into another world. The good of superb and the service excellent
The atmosphere down there was great. Staff clearly loved what they did and were keen to discuss food and wine. Really enjoyable evening, hope to go back soon
Pleasant atmosphere, good service. We chose the sharing platter for 4 people, the food was tasty, the starter was nicer than the main, will probably try an individual dish if we go again.
Authentic Place in Manchester. If you want to try something different, the Armenian Tavern is a good choice. Remember to end the meal with the baklava and the Armenian Coffee without sugar!
Excellent food, especially starters, large portions, interesting wine, excellent service, pleasant space. Would go back many times if we lived in Manchester. Steep stairs from street.
HAD A GREAT NIGHT THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT THE STAFF FRIENDLY AND THE PRICE WAS GOOD AND WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO MY FRIENDS AND WILL RETURN
Amazing food amazing service, large portions for great prices. Nice little restaurant located in the centre of Manchester. Large range of drink and food choices.
It's the second time we have been to the Armenian taverna. The food is excellent and plentiful,it's a hidden gem and very easy to miss it.We shall be going again.
Visited 6.15 on a Saturday evening with a group of friends. Excellent food and service, couldn't fault any of it - would definitely go back
Friendly service and great food. Far from expensive for city centre Manchester . Armenian brandy worth a try! Definitely worth a visit. meat banquet recommended
We had the mixed starter which was Delicious, the staff were really friendly and helpful, There was a great selection of wines (although very sweet!)
Great food and service. It was very quiet thiough so I think they are suffering from the tram works. However we will definitely return though
