More about the restaurant: 1933 by Toast Box Singapore

Sometimes, when you’re gazing up at the skyline in and around the downtown area, indeed in particular when you emerge from City Hall station, it’s hard to imagine Singapore as a city oriented in any direction other than the future. All you have to do is bring your eyes a little more down to earth, though, and you can see how this cosmopolis is built from several intertwined strata of a very long and interesting history. Take the Capitol Piazza building along Stamford Road, for instance, exemplary of colonial architecture. Then head inside, step into a time portal and take a trip back to the 1930s and 1933 by Toast Box, a cafe and Asian restaurant where cultures converge.

Check out their 1933 Sling Night menu too!Award-winning Singaporean hospitality brand The BreadTalk Group’s latest venture is the unique 1933 by Toast Box, a cafe and Asian restaurant set inside the newly renovated but distinctly heritage Capitol Piazza building along Stamford Road, right across from City Hall station. Spread over two open storeys facing out over an interior courtyard, it’s here that diners can find the finest renditions of 1930s cuisines, such as Hainanese chicken rice and nanyang curry chicken, marrying Asian flavours with Western influences for a unique Southeast Asian culinary adventure.

In addition to the eclectic core offering, 1933 by Toast Box also boasts the signature nanyang coffee expertly brewed from Torrefacto beans. Unique to Singapore and Malaysia, nanyang coffee is made according to a traditional Hainanese method, whereby beans are roasted over hot coals with butter to release the beans’ essential flavours and aromas. Ground beans are brewed then strained through a cloth sock for a thick and strong base that is often flavoured with sweetened condensed milk. Besides this special offering, 1933 also serves an all-day local-style breakfast with favourites like kaya toast and yam cake from 8am, executive lunch sets, coffee break set, dinner sets, a happy hour, and the 1933 Sling Nights, making this the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city after a hard afternoon’s shopping in the Capitol Piazza shopping mall, recently reopened across from City Hall, St Andrews Cathedral, and Raffles City.
