There are plenty of ways to enjoy an Asian meal in Singapore – Cantonese dim sum, Thai steamboat mookata, Japanese sushi, Korean BBQ – and it is often easy to overlook the local Nyonya and Peranakan cuisine of the city state. Simple Peranakan Cuisine in Punggol seeks to redress that balance, with a focus on the dishes that have been around longest in Singapore. This means traditional Nyonya fish, minced mackerel with a spice paste, coconut milk, yellow ginger and steamed in a banana leaf, as well as deep-fried beancurd stuffed with minced pork, prawns, water chestnut and carrot with chilli and sweet sauce. Simply Peranakan is on the outskirts of the city, facing over to Malaysia on Serangoon Island on Punggol Point Road, but it is well worth a trip: gather your friends and family and make the journey out to Punggol Settlement for a superb Peranakan meal.
