This was the reaction of many Boon Keng and Kallang residents when the circus sideshow of a Oh My Tian cafe popped its stripy tent up along Whampoa West, churning out a cavalcade of decorated cakes like the Kopi Kaya Cake, the Rainbow Sprinkles Cake, the Floral Passion Fruit Cake, and the Hua Mu Lan – these latter two in particular looking like edible stained glass windows from the workshops of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement. For indeed, this unique Singapore cafe and dessert restaurant takes its inspiration from a variety of retro and alt. Subcultures – Victorian steampunk, 16th-century aesthetics, apparently, modern latte art, and that kind of Venice Beach freakshow/cabaret vibe that’s made corsets and top-hats acceptable as daily dress once again.
